Architect Erik Knippers designed a modern barn-style home in Veenendaal that brings together sustainability, craftsmanship and self-building. The client constructed the entire home themselves, from the foundations to the finishing work. The result demonstrates how close collaboration between architect and client can lead to a home that is meticulously designed, both technically and aesthetically.

The home features a timber-frame structure insulated with wood-fibre insulation. Untreated Platowood Fraké was selected for the façade and combined with Cape Cod cladding. Thanks to the patented platonising process, Fraké is durable, dimensionally stable and suitable for long-term exterior applications. Combined with vapour-permeable construction, moisture-regulating sheathing boards and insulation values well above current standards, this choice of materials contributes to a healthy, future-proof living environment.

By leaving the Platowood Fraké untreated, the façade is free to weather naturally. After three years, the wood has developed an attractive, even silver-grey appearance that perfectly complements the home’s understated architecture.

Fraké also plays an important role in the interior. The wood was used for the ceiling and wall cladding, preserving its warm, natural brown colour. This creates a beautiful contrast between the weathered façade and the warm interior, while connecting indoors and outdoors as one.

The design makes optimal use of the site and, despite its clean lines, feels warm and inviting. It is a home that is not only efficiently and sustainably built, but also rich in material expression and detail—precisely the qualities for which Erik Knippers’ work is known.
